Op het moment dat de helikopter geland is mogen de verlichtingen dimmen of helemaal uit. Hiervoor worden de LAM sensoren ingezet om binnen een ingesteld afstandsbereik (ook wel window) de aanwezigheid van helikopters te detecteren. Omdat de laser een afstand meet, detecteert de sensor, in tegenstelling tot radar sensoren, ook stilstaande objecten. Bovendien blijft deze bij zware weersomstandigheden betrouwbaar functioneren.
